Gregory Nathaniel Washington[1] is an American mechanical engineer currently serving as the 8th president of George Mason University in Northern Virginia since July 2020. He previously served as dean of engineering at the University of California, Irvine from August 2011 to July 2020.
Washington's field of research is on dynamical systems, smart materials, and related devices.
Washington was born in New York City. He attended William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, graduating in 1984.[2][3]
Washington studied mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1989 and a doctorate in 1994.[4] His doctoral dissertation was titled Modal control of reflector surfaces for far-field power maximization (1994).[1] He was the first person in his family to obtain a college degree.[2][3]
