Guy travelled with his father in 834 as part of the entourage of Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I. Guy was given the abbey of Mettlach, in Lotharingia in 840, when the Emperor Louis I died.[citation needed]

Guy married Ida (Itta, Ita or Itana),[2] daughter of Prince Sico of Benevento. Their children were Lambert I, future Holy Roman Emperor, Guy III, Conrad (A lesser son who we know little about) and a daughter named Rothilda who married Adalbert I, Margrave of Tuscany.[2]
