At the 2022 Junior World Weightlifting Championships held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, Hakan Şükrü Kurnaz won two gold medals in the men's 81 kg event — lifting 150 kg in the snatch and achieving a total of 324 kg.[1]
At the 2023 European Weightlifting Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, competing in the men's 96 kg category, he won the silver medal in the snatch with a lift of 170 kg, finished sixth in the clean and jerk (191 kg), and placed fourth overall with a total of 361 kg.
However, all his results were later disqualified after he tested positive for doping by the International Testing Agency (ITA).[2]
Following an ITA-led investigation, Kurnaz received a 22-month suspension for doping at the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan.[3]
In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games, Kurnaz won a bronze medal in the men's 94 kg clean and jerk event with a lift of 165 kg.[4] He contributed to Turkey's weightlifting team total of 21 medals in the competition.[5]
