"Hallo Bandoeng" is a song by the Dutch levenslied singer Willy Derby [nl] (real name: Willem Frederik Christiaan Dieben, 1886-1944). It was released in 1929 and sold more than 50,000 copies, an astronomical number for that time.[1] It was one of Derby's songs that became part of Dutch culture.[2] The phrase "Hallo Bandoeng" was well known at that time, as the usual opening used by Radio Kootwijk when establishing a connection with Bandung (in Dutch: "Bandoeng"), one of the most important cities in the then Dutch East Indies.[3]
