He Who Fights with Monsters is an Isekai and LitRPG progression fantasy book series by Australian author Travis Deverell who uses the pen name of Shirtaloon. SciFiNow described the series as following Jason, an office supplies store manager, who accidentally enters a magical world.[1]

In 2025, The Beat reported that He Who Fights with Monsters had sold "many millions of units" across ebooks and audiobooks, making it one of the genre's most commercially successful series.[2] The 2026 reissue of He Who Fights with Monsters, Book 1: Outworlder by Aethon Books reached #12 on The New York Times Best Seller List and #7 on the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list.[3][4]

Publication history
Travis Deverell began developing He Who Fights with Monsters as an online serial under the pen name Shirtaloon, building an early audience on Royal Road and Patreon before the work moved into commercial ebook, print, and audiobook editions. In a Royal Road interview, Deverell described the transition as part of a wider “LitRPG gold rush,” noting that Podium initially approached him for audiobooks and that Aethon Books became involved for ebook publication. He Who Fights With Monsters has been compared with other icons of the genre like Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman and The Primal Hunter by Zorgath.[5][better source needed]
Aethon Books began releasing He Who Fights With Monsters in paperback in 2021, and in 2026 began a hardback reissue.[4] The audiobook editions are narrated by Heath Miller.[citation needed] The series’ development later expanded beyond prose publishing: Aethon Books announced a webcomic adaptation planned for 2026, with Deverell describing the project as a chance to bring the story to “a fresh new visual medium."[citation needed]

The series was described by Publishers Weekly as "much-beloved in the litRPG community."[4] Aethon Books describes the first volume as having accumulated 13 million views as a serial novel on Royal Road before its Kindle publication.
Reader platforms such as Goodreads list the series as having twelve published primary works and high reader ratings across the available volumes. Fan developed art is widely shared on platforms like Discord and Fandom.

In July 2026 Catalyst Game Labs announced they have partnered with Travis Deverell, to develop a He Who Fights with Monsters tabletop adaptations, including a role-playing game using a modified Dice Core system and a competitive board game set in Pallimustus.[7]
