On February 19, 2025, it was announced that Nmixx would be releasing their fourth extended play titled Fe3O4: Forward on March 17.[2] With the release of the track listing on March 2, "High Horse" was revealed to be one of the tracks.[3] On March 4, after the performance visualizer for the song was released, it was released as a pre-release single.[4][5]

"High Horse" was written by Kim Su-ji (Lalala Studio), pH-1, and Abir, and composed by Lee Woo-min "Collapsedone", Abir, Julius Rodriguez, and Fredrik "Fredro" Odesjo.[3] The song is described as being "a mix of genres such as hip-hop, jazz, pop, and various elements", featuring "a unique rhythm that intersects piano and breakbeat based on lyrical ballads".[5]
