Background and recording
In September 2024, Goulding shared that she was "working [her] way back slowly" while boxing and exercising, and added that it would "take a minute", simultaneously focused on creating new music. A subsequent clip showed her scrolling through multiple audio files on her phone, which appeared to be voice-note recordings labelled as new material.[1] In an interview with The Sun on 1 December, Goulding revealed that she drew upon a "personal place" while writing songs for the album.[2]
In July 2025, Goulding teased details about her next release, marking the anniversary of her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue (2020). She wrote that she had been working on new material for nearly two years. According to her, the album was created alongside "the best writers and musicians in the world", and she aimed to produce something that did not "sound like anything else out there".[3]
Goulding described I Know Too Much as an album centered on the tension between knowledge and uncertainty, explaining that it came from the idea that "maybe we can know too much" and that "there is a certain kind of freedom in the ease of not knowing." She added that it reflects a period of personal transition, during which songwriting and studio work served as a form of refuge and therapy.[4]
Composition
According to Goulding, the lyrics of I Know Too Much include "observations" about her personal life, friendships, and connection with nature, and taking more time in the studio allowed her to write with greater emotional depth. She added: "I've made a classical album that's not out yet. I have a huge passion for classical music."[2] Goulding also confirmed that the record will remain rooted in pop music—saying she "can't help" herself when it comes to the genre—and described it as featuring "guitars, bass, strings, harmonies for days, [and] the saddest words [she] ever wrote".[3] The album was also shaped by Goulding's separation from her former husband Caspar Jopling in 2024; although she stated that she had not intended to create a "divorce album", many of the songs were influenced by that period of her life.[5]
Promotion and release
Goulding has given fans an update on her new album, saying that her previous record, Higher Than Heaven (2023), was created "intentionally impersonal", while I Know Too Much is "little different" from it.[6] On 2 June, Goulding revealed her sixth studio album I Know Too Much's cover artwork and title.[note 1] Composed of ten tracks,[11] it will be released through Polydor Records.[12] Goulding performed its lead single, "Black Prada Dress", on 7 June with English pianist Jools Holland on BBC Two, and prerformed a brand-new track titled "4 Seasons".[13][12] Goulding shared previews of the songs "Loser" and "I Know Too Much" during the album roll-out.[14][15]
Singles
On 23 May 2026, Goulding debuted I Know Too Much's lead single, titled "Black Prada Dress", on BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend at Herrington Country Park.[16] The song was announced along with the album's announcement, and it was released on 5 June.[note 1] "4 Seasons" followed on 31 July, serving as the second single.[17] On 5 August, the third single, "Ravers", was released; its music video premiered two days later.[18]
