The Ledger-Equirer called it "an incomparable blend of suspense, humor and the heart stopping twist of a surprise ending."[1] The Record Journal called it "more than an ordinary shocker".[2] The Pittsburgh Press called it " a different type of story... rich with humour and well-drawn characterization."[3]
The New York Times called McShane "another of the brighter authors to emerge in the 1960's... who invents wonderful titles", and reviewing the novel said "McShane works out beautifully what must follow [the meeting of the two lead characters]. One's only (and probably hypercritical) reservation would be that this is, even more than most suspense novels a short story developed as a book."[4]
