He won a gold medal at the 1955 World Ice Hockey Championships in West Germany.[1] In 2005, he was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.[2] He was born in South Porcupine, Ontario (now part of Timmins, Ontario).

At the 1955 IIHF world championship tournament, McLelland was outstanding. He recorded four shutouts for Canada, including a 5-0 whitewash of the Soviet Union in the game that decided the tournament's winner.
