Jacob Cress (born 1944 in Norton, Virginia, United States),[1] better known as Jake Cress, is a furniture maker in Fincastle, Virginia who is known for his interpretations of classical 18th century furniture.[1][2] He considers himself to be a cabinet maker and not an artist.[3] He also builds normal classical furniture, miniature furniture, and carves boxes, as well as decorative pieces.[2] He also restores furniture. Additionally, he builds more modern pieces like country tables and desks.[4] Cress works with mahogany, walnut, and cherry woods.[5] His animated works include "The Decorator," "Alladin's Lamp," "Hickory Dickory Dock Clock," "Self-Portrait," and "Clock Face."[6] Cress crafts each piece of furniture by hand in his shop without sketching the furniture before he begins working on it.[5]

Cress graduated from John I. Burton High School, where he failed woodworking.[5][7] He then joined the Navy in 1963 and attended Columbia School of Broadcasting in New York while he served.[4] When he left the Navy, he worked for a radio station in Virginia.[4] He moved to New York and acted in off-Broadway productions.[4]
