History

The Reserve Bank of India issued a banking license to the bank under Section 22 (1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.[5]

Prior to becoming a bank, the company was India's largest microfinance institution, Janalakshmi Financial Services,[6] founded July 24, 2006.[7] [8] As a microfinance lender, the company survived large losses following the 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation, reporting total losses of ₹2,504 crore (US$338 million) at the time of its conversion to a small finance bank.[6]

In March 2008, the bank was registered as an NBFC to start the activities as a non-banking financial institution without accepting public deposits. In September 2013, the establishment was converted into a non-banking small finance company-microfinance institution (NBFC-MFI) [9].

The Bank reported in November 2019 that the September 2019 quarter was its first profitable quarter since demonetisation.[10]

In May 2026, TVS VENU had agreed to acquire a minority stake up to 9.9% in Jana Small Finance Bank. This would be done through a combination of primary issuance of warrants and secondary share purchases, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions [11].

The bank has implemented technology-based solutions to execute cashless disbursement of loans. Their collection mechanisms have also been digitised [15]. Mobile applications were facilitating this. Apart from standard digital payment services, including NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, e-NACH/NACH, it provides a UPI QR code based EMI payment service [16].
