Jay Carter Hartzell (born September 1, 1969) is an American economist, currently serving as the 11th president of Southern Methodist University. He was previously the 30th President of the University of Texas at Austin, holding office from 2020 to 2025.

Hartzell was born in Kansas and grew up in Oklahoma. He graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio cum laude with a B.S. in business administration and economics. After receiving a doctorate in finance from UT Austin, he served as a tenure-track assistant professor of finance at New York University's Stern School of Business between 1998 and 2001.[1]
