Joe George

Joseph Leon George (October 8, 1915 – September 27, 1996) was a sailor in the United States Navy who received the Bronze Star with a "V" Device for Valor for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a Petty Officer First Class on the USS Vestal (AR-4) on December 7, 1941, he disobeyed orders and threw a line from the Vestal to the sinking USS Arizona (BB-39). Six trapped sailors escaped to safety using the lifeline.[1]
George was born on October 8, 1915, in Franklin, Georgia.[2] He enlisted into the Navy in 1935.[3]
