John Gillan (boxer)

Gillan boxed out of the Aberdeen Amateur Boxing Club.^[2] He represented the Scottish Commonwealth Games team^[3] at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland,^[4][5] participating in the lightweight category.^[6] He won the silver medal, losing out to Nigerian Adeyemi Abayomi in the final bout.^[7]

He represented Scotland at the 1971 and 1973 European Championships and in between was selected for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich but had to withdraw through injury.^[2]

In early 1974, Gillan attended a second Commonwealth Games when being selected for the Scottish team for the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he competed in the lightweight division.^[1] Shortly after the Games in May 1974, he finished runner-up behind John Lynch of Kensington ABC in the final of the prestigious ABA Championships at the Empire Pool, Wembley.^[8]

Gillan won six consecutive Scottish titles from 1970 to 1975,^[9] before turning professional in 1975 and fought four professional bouts between 1975 and 1976.^[10][11]
