Juan Sánchez Muñoz (born 1967[2]) is the fourth chancellor for the University of California, Merced.[3] He is the school's first Hispanic chancellor. Previously, he served as president of the University of Houston - Downtown.[4]
He is the son of farm workers, and a California native.[5][6]
He is on the board of directors for numerous community and nonprofit organizations, including the Excelencia in Education, Gallo Center for the Arts, Bay Area Council, and the Yosemite Conservancy.[3][7][8] He has served pn the California Governors Council for Post-Secondary Education on the Fresno K-16 Collaborative, which aims to increase the number of undergraduate/graduate degrees earned by residents in the Greater Fresno area.[9][10][11]
Muñoz served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.[12]
