Kalmati or Kalmat is a Baloch clan[1][2][3] settled in Balochistan, Pakistan. Members of the clan also live in Iran and Afghanistan.

Kalmatis mostly work in cultivation and business. The famous graveyard called Chaukhandi tombs in Karachi, is associated with this tribe.[4]

History

Kalamati is a baloch tribe and Hammal Kalmati is a notable baloch hero from kalamati clan who fought against Portuguese forces in Makran.[5]

The Mughals had invaded Sindh and dealt with Kalmati and Nizamani Baluch tribes, who had a powerful force of 20,000 [6]

Dayaram Gidumal writes that a Baloch legend is backed up by the medieval Qarmatians.[7] The fact that the Kalmatis were ethnic Baluchis is also confirmed by the Persian historian in the 16th century Muhammad Qasim Ferishta.[8]

Abu Fazl mentions them, ruling most of Sindh with other Baluch tribes, The Kalmat state was powerful enough to constantly raid Punjab during Akbar Reign [9]
