Kate Sclater

Kate Sclater (or Slater; married name Kate Furnell; 20 October 1863[1] – 1950)[2] was a British trade unionist and match packer.[3] She was among the leaders of the 1888 Matchgirls' strike, and one of the first members of the strike committee.[4][5][6]

Kate Sclater was born in Southampton in 1863, the daughter of Ellen Jane (née Blake)[7] and William Sipping Sclater.[8][9] She was baptised on 24 January 1864.[8][10] The family moved to London sometime between May 1873 and October 1874.[9]

Sclater married George Godby Furnell in 1889.[11][3]
