Keladi Chennamma (died 1696) was queen regnant of the Keladi Nayaka Kingdom also called 'Ikkeri Nayakas' in Karnataka between 1672 and 1697.

Early life
Reign
After Somashekhara Nayaka's death in 1672, Chennamma efficiently handled the administration of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty. During her reign of 25 years, she repelled the advance of the Mughal Army led by Aurangzeb from her military base in the kingdom of Keladi located in Sagara, Karnataka, India. She adopted Basavappa Nayaka, one of her close relatives who succeeded as Hiriya Basappa Nayaka. Channagiri is named after her.[1]
Keladi Timmanna Nayaka was the Chief General, Commander-in-Chief, Dalavayi, Mukhya Senadipati, Pradhana Senapati, Army Chief Commander, Chief Minister, and the most trusted high-ranking official of the Keladi Kingdom. He served under King Shivappa Nayaka (1645–1660) and Queen Keladi Chennamma (1671–1696).[2]
Early Life
He was born in Matti village, Matti Seeme, Bhatkal Taluk, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka. Matti Seeme was a prominent province of the Keladi Kingdom known for its warriors.[3]
He is renowned as the saviour of the Keladi Kingdom on two separate occasions. He saved King Shivappa Nayaka from the Portuguese and Queen Keladi Rani Chennamma from the Mughals. He was also an expert in traditional Indian wrestling, known as Malla Yuddha.[4]
Historical Evidence for Community
The community of Timmanna Nayaka is well-documented in the primary historical records of Keladi:
- Primary Source - Keladi Kaifiyat Volume 2, Page 41: The original record states, "Matti Seemeyavanu Ediga Timmanna Nayaka..." indicating that Timmanna Nayaka was from the Ediga community of Matti Seeme.[5]
- Primary Source - Keladi Kaifiyat Volume 2, Page 88: The record states, "Ediga Timmanna stood as the protector of Rani Chennamma during the crisis when the Palegars revolted."[6]
- Secondary Source - Historian B. S. Gopala Rao in Keladi - A Historical Study: The historian records that "Timmanna was an Ediga by caste from Matti."[7]
According to the primary historical source Keladi Kaifiyat, Volume 2, Page 41 and Page 88, Timmanna Nayaka belonged to the Ediga community from Matti Seeme.[8]
Military Career
Under King Shivappa Nayaka (1645–1660) – War with the Portuguese
Position: Dalavayi (Commander-in-Chief) of the Keladi Army.[9] Enemy: Portuguese Estado da India, which controlled the Kanara coastal forts. Year of War: 1653. The growing threat of the Portuguese was eliminated in 1653, and the ports of Mangalore, Kundapura, and Honnavar were brought under Keladi control.

- Battle of Mangalore Fort (1653) – Defeated the Portuguese garrison and captured the port.
- Battle of Basrur Fort / Barcelore (1653) – Captured the main rice trading port.
- Battle of Barkur Fort (1653) – Captured the strategic fort.
- Battle of Kundapura Fort (1653) – Captured the Portuguese naval base.
- Battle of Honnavar Fort / Onor (1653) – Captured the Portuguese headquarters in North Kanara.
How He Saved Shivappa Nayaka: The Portuguese were attacking Keladi's trade, blocking its expansion to the sea, and supporting the Bijapur Sultanate. By destroying their forts, Timmanna Nayaka eliminated the threat, secured a sea border for Keladi, and generated immense income from trade.[10]
Under King Shivappa Nayaka (1645–1660), he defeated the Portuguese forces at Mangalore, Honnavar, Basrur, and Kundapura and successfully annexed the entire Kanara coast to the Keladi Kingdom.[11]
Expansion (1653–1655): After securing the coastal regions, he marched to the Kasaragod region and installed a pillar of victory at Nileshwaram. Forts such as Chandragiri, Bekal, Adka, Arikady, and Mangalore were built by Shivappa Nayaka. The total coast annexed was approximately 200 KM, from Mangalore to Kasaragod.[12]
Under Queen Keladi Chennamma (1671–1696) – War with Palegars and Mughals
Crisis: After the death of Shivappa Nayaka, his son Somasekhara Nayaka was murdered by traitors. When Chennamma ascended the throne in 1671, the Palegars revolted.[13] Position: Chief Minister and Head of the Cabinet. Historical record states, "Her cabinet was headed by Timmanna Naik, who was the descendant of a commander of Vijayanagara."[14]
War Statistics:
- Suppression of Palegar Revolt (1671–72) – Destroyed the rebellious Palegars who attempted to capture the Keladi throne.
- Battle Against the Mughals of Aurangzeb (1689) – Aurangzeb demanded that Keladi hand over Rajaram, son of Shivaji, who had taken shelter in Keladi. Timmanna Nayaka protected the Queen and facilitated shelter for Rajaram, enabling him to reach Jinji and continue the Maratha resistance.[15]
How He Saved Rani Chennamma: He remained loyal when all the Palegars betrayed the throne. He destroyed the traitorous Palegars, protected the Queen from the Mughals, and secured the throne of Keladi. Therefore, he is considered the saviour for the second time.[16]
Under Queen Keladi Chennamma (1671–1696), he suppressed rebellious Palegars, protected the Queen from the invasion of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, and provided shelter to Rajaram, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.[17]
Legacy
He is known as the Saviour of the Keladi Kingdom Twice – once from the Portuguese and once from the Mughals and the Palegars. His conquests provided Keladi with 200 KM of coastline.[18]
