Kunal Sen

Kunal Sen is an economist specializing in development economics. He is professor of development economics at the University of Manchester and Director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).

Education
Sen received his PhD in economics from Rutgers University in 1989.[1] He previously completed a Master of Arts in economics at Rutgers University in 1987. He earned an MA in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1984 and a BA in economics and mathematics from the University of Bombay in 1982.[2]
Academic career
Sen began his academic career at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in Mumbai, where he served as assistant professor and later associate professor between 1990 and 1995. He later held academic positions at Massey University in New Zealand and at the University of East Anglia, where he served from 1999 to 2006.
In 2006, Sen joined the University of Manchester as professor of development economics at the Global Development Institute and served as research director from 2011 to 2016.[3]
In August 2018, he was appointed Director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), a United Nations research institute based in Helsinki.[2][4]
Sen has also been a Research Fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics since 2006[5] and held the Dr. V. R. V. Rao Chair Professorship at the Institute for Social and Economic Change in India from 2020 to 2022.[6]
Honours
Sen was awarded the Dudley Seers Prize by the Journal of Development Studies in 2003 and the Sanjaya Lall Prize by Oxford Development Studies in 2006 for his academic publications.[7] He was elected a Founding Fellow of the Royal Economic Society in 2025.[8]
