Kōtoku Wamura (Japanese: 和村幸得, Hepburn: Wamura Kōtoku; February 21, 1909 – October 18, 1997) was a Japanese politician and hero who was the mayor of Fudai in Iwate Prefecture from 1947 to 1987.[1] He was credited with creating the floodgates that saved the village of Fudai, Iwate from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
