History
Las Vigas and its surrounding communities had been demanding the creation of an independent municipal government since at least 2014.[7] On 31 August 2021, the Guerrero state congress approved the formation of the municipality of Las Vigas from nineteen localities previously belonging to San Marcos.[1] The state constitutional amendment establishing the municipality was passed on 13 January 2022 and went into force on 21 May 2022.[8]
Administration
Las Vigas will hold its first elections as an independent municipality in 2024. The municipal government of Las Vigas will consist of a municipal president, a councillor (Spanish: síndico), and six trustees (regidores).[9]
