Lauⓘ is a Local Government Area in Taraba State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Lau and the area is dominated by the indigenous Bakula tribes I.e Kunini, Winlau,Bandawa, Shomo, Minda, Jessi, Mumuye, Yandang, Jenjo and Fulani. Lau Local government has a border with Ardo Kola, Jalingo, Yorro and Zing local governments of Taraba state. It also shares a border with Numan, Adamawa State. The current 2nd class Chief of Lau is Alhaji Abubakar Umar Danburam III. It also has two 3rd Class graded Chiefs: Kuh Bakula, H.R.M Kuh Tahir Nyawo Kunini, Jah the 1st, Chief of Bakula Chiefdom and Kpan Sanwi, H.R.M Dah Haniel Banti Hilewuni, the Chief of Sanwi Chiefdom.This represents the plurality of the Local Government.
Lau Local Government is blessed with very fertile land for agriculture, fishing and ecotourism potentials;and it has various cultural activities that will guaranty internally generated revenue for the Local Government, State and Nigeria at large etc.
The name of the town literally means ‘mud’ in the Bakula WinLau language.[2]

It has an area of 1,660 km2 and a population of 149,700 at the 2022 census.[3]
