The line was built by the Worcester and Hereford Railway, although it was the West Midland Railway which opened the station on either 13 or 15 September 1861.[3][4][5] A branch line from Ledbury to Gloucester, via Dymock and Newent, opened in July 1885.[6] The Newent branch was closed in 1959.[7]
The station master's house is on the approach to the station forecourt and is Grade II listed.[8]
