The mountain is characterized by a large glaciated plateau above approximately 3,400 metres, making it one of the more accessible high-altitude mountaineering objectives in the southern Massif des Écrins.[2]

The first recorded ascent took place on 19 June 1873 by Frederick Gardiner, Thomas Cox, William Martin Pendlebury, Charles Taylor, Hans and Peter Baumann, Peter Knubel and Josef Marie Lochmatter during the golden age of Alpine mountaineering.[3]
