Cary then entered residence at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.[1] In 1970, he took a leave of absence from St. Patrick's seminary, returning to his studies 18 years later.[2]
