List of Phi Beta Kappa chapters

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest academic honor society in the United States.[1] It was founded at the College of William & Mary in December 1776.[2] In the following list, active chapters are indicated in bold and inactive chapters and institutions are in italics.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

  1. The numbering system indicated order of charter. However, in 1922, the Catalogue of the Cornell Chapter renumbers the chapter, excluding the Alpha of Alabama which had gone extinct during the Civil War.
  2. The Alpha chapter at Harvard and the Iota chapter at Radcliffe merged as the Alpha-Iota chapter of Massachusetts at Harvard University, effective June 1995.
