List of United States technological universities

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Technical universities, institutes of technology, and polytechnic schools are forms of higher education associated with engineering, applied science, and technological fields. Scholarship on technical universities traces their development to late eighteenth-century technical institutes and polytechnic schools, many of which later became research institutions while maintaining close links to industry.[1] In the United States, the related field of engineering technology education expanded after World War II and especially after the launch of Sputnik, including programs housed in colleges of technology.[2]

This list includes United States universities, colleges, and campuses whose names, official designations, or institutional classifications identify them with technological, technical, polytechnic, engineering, mining, or science-and-technology education. Institutions may qualify by using terms such as "Institute of Technology", "Polytechnic", "Technological University", "Technical University", "University of Science and Technology", "School of Mines", "School of Engineering", or "College of Technology", or by being classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a special-focus institution in technology, engineering, and sciences.[3] The listed institutions vary widely in mission, control, academic level, and research activity, so inclusion in the list does not by itself imply a particular admissions selectivity, research status, or institutional rank.
