1894–2005

In July 1894, Connecticut moved executions to Wethersfield State Prison, where an "automatic gallows" had been installed. The device hung prisoners by pulling them upwards using weights, rather than the usual downwards drop.[84][85] Although claimed to be more humane than traditional hanging, this mechanism was removed in May 1936 to be replaced with electrocution that November.[86][87] Only one execution occurred in Connecticut after the Gregg v. Georgia ruling of 1976, carried out by lethal injection at Osborn Correctional Institution.
