Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology (MBUST) (Nepali: मदन भण्डारी विज्ञान तथा प्रविधि विश्वविद्यालय) is a public research-oriented university located in Chitlang, Thaha Municipality, in the Makwanpur District of Bagmati Province, Nepal.[1] It was established on 3 August 2022 under the Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology Act, 2079. MBUST is the first research oriented university of Nepal.
It was the first university of Nepal where the head of university is a university president appointed via board of Trustees, with no influence from partisan politics, or government. The university does not have prime minister as a chancellor, nor other government leaders unlike other universities of Nepal. MBUST is also the first autonomous university of Nepal.[2]
MBUST was initiated following the visit of General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping to Nepal in 2019.[3][4] The government of Nepal later formalized the university through legislation in 2022, naming it in honor of the late communist leader Madan Bhandari.[5]
