Manisha Singh

Manisha Singh (born 1971)[2] is an American attorney and government official who served as assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs in the first Trump administration until January 20, 2021.[3] She previously served as acting under secretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment at the U.S. Department of State.[4] In April 2020, President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Singh to be the next United States representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with the rank of ambassador.[5] On January 3, 2021, her nomination was returned to the President under Rule XXXI, Paragraph 6 of the United States Senate.[6]

Early life and education

Singh was born in Pantnagar, India, and raised in Lake Alfred, Florida, where her father was a professor at the University of Florida. She has one sister.[7]

Singh earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Miami. She earned a Juris Doctor from the Fredric G. Levin College of Law at the University of Florida and Master of Laws in International Legal Studies from the Washington College of Law at American University.[8][9]

Career

In the private sector, Singh worked as a lawyer at Reed Smith and Squire Patton Boggs. She served as the deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs during the George W. Bush administration.[4] In addition, she was an executive J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

In 2018, she was appointed acting under secretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment shield ombudsperson by Trump until Keith J. Krach was confirmed to the position. She also served as the foreign affairs sous sherpa for the 45th G7 summit.[citation needed]

Singh was the senior fellow for international economic affairs at the American Foreign Policy Council as well as a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations.[10]

Assistant secretary of state

In September 2018, Singh testified before Congress that, unless Russia complied with international chemical weapons laws by the November deadline, the United States would proceed with the sanctions announced in August.[11]
