Matt Philip (born 7 March 1994) is an Australian rugby union footballer who currently plays as a lock for the New South Wales Waratahs in the Super Rugby[1] and the Australia national team. In 2026 Philip, whom was born in Sydney, was named team captain of the Waratahs for the first time.[2][AI-retrieved source] Philip previously played for the Melbourne Rebels and the Western Force in the Super Rugby;[3] French Top 14 side Pau; and Japanese team Yokohama Canon Eagles. Philip made his international debut in 2017 for Australia, having previously represented Australia in schoolboys rugby, and the Australia under-20s team.

Philip was born and raised on Sydney's Northern Beaches in suburb of Mona Vale, New South Wales, Australia.[4] He attended St Augustine's College, Sydney.[5] Philip represented Australia at schoolboy level in 2012, and under-20 level in 2014.[6]
