Early life

Maxwell Bassin was born on April 13, 2002 to his mother Annie and his father Micheal, who was the senior director of national sales at Alternative Distribution Alliance.[2] He spent his formative years living in the neighborhood of Fort Greene in Brooklyn, New York.[3] When Bassin was 8 years old, his father passed away due to complications from long-term pneumonia.[2]

At the age of 6, Bassin started to learn how to play the drums, learning a sense of rhythm through his previous experience with tap-dancing.[4] Soon after, he was enrolled in the Park Slope Rock School music program. It was there where his classmates from Brooklyn Friends School, Cameron Winter and Emily Green, started performing together and developing their musicianship.[1] Bassin's first record that he bought was a vinyl copy of Parachutes by English rock band Coldplay from bookseller Barnes & Noble.[4]

Career

After years of performing together in ensembles set up by Park Slope Rock School, Bassin, Winter, Green, and bassist Dominic DiGesu formed Geese in 2016 when they were high school students. The quartet assembled spare musical equipment from their parents, including some left by Bassin's late father, into a home studio in his basement dubbed the Nest.[5] The band would write and record material after-school which culminated in two EP's, their self-released debut A Beautiful Memory, and the beginnings of their second album Projector. The band planned to break up after they graduated school, with Bassin planning to move to Europe after being rejected from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York University.[1]

In 2020, Geese's online output was discovered by Willie Upbin, who offered to be the band's manager. Upbin then presented the then unreleased Projector to multiple indie labels such as Sub Pop and Fat Possum, who offered deals.[6] Ultimately, the band signed with Partisan Records.[3] Geese released Projector in 2021, along with 3D Country in 2023 and Getting Killed in 2025 to glowing critical reception.

Influences

Bassin says that a lot of his favorite drummers are all "people that play fast and play loud", listing Greg Saunier, Morgan Simpson, John Bonham, and Zach Hill. He also described the members of Geese, including himself, as being huge fans of Australian rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard as teenagers, calling a concert that he attended at 16 years old "a life changing experience".[4]

Personal life

What up, the Brits? I just want to say, free Palestine, fuck ICE, R.I.P. Mani, let’s go Geese!

—Max Bassin's acceptance speech at the Brit Awards in 2026[7]

Bassin has been in a relationship with artist Charlotte Tampol since April of 2022.[8]

He has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine amidst the war on the Gaza Strip. Bassin, with the rest of Geese, played the Artists for Aid benefit concert in January 2026 for war relief in both Palestine and Sudan.[9] When accepting the award for International Group of the Year at the 2026 Brit Awards, he gave a speech in which he supported a free Palestine, as well as criticized the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).[7]
