Md. Nazrul Islam (government official)

Md. Nazrul Islam was born on 5 June 1959 in Chandrakona of Sherpur Thana, Mymensingh District, East Pakistan, Pakistan, to Md. Ansar Ali and Mosammat Rezia Khatun as their first child. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Dhaka in 1982 and enrolled for a master's degree the following year.^[1]

Islam joined the public administration cadre of the special Bangladesh Civil Service batch of 1984.^[2] He served as the upazila executive officer in Boda, Nabiganj, Bahubal, and Habiganj Sadar Upazila; deputy director of the Youth Development Department in Mymensingh; chief executive officer of the District Council in Netrokona; zonal settlement officer in Mymensingh; director general of the National Academy for Primary Education; chief executive officer of the Dhaka North City Corporation; and administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation.^[3]

As an additional secretary, he served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. On 15 December 2016, he became a member of the Planning Commission as acting secretary and succeeded M.A.N. Siddique as the secretary of the Road Transport Division on 12 October 2017.^[2]

In November 2017, China Harbour Engineering Company attempted to bribe him with $100,000 hidden inside a tea packet. Following the directive of then-minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, the bribe was returned to the Chinese Embassy.^[4]

Although he was scheduled to retire on 4 June 2018, his tenure as secretary of the Road Division was extended for two years on a contractual basis.^[5] In 2020, his contract was extended for another two years.^[6] On 21 May 2022, he was replaced by ABM Amin Ullah Nuri.^[7]
