Melissococcus plutonius is a species of prokaryote in the family Enterococcaceae that causes the disease European foulbrood in honey bees.
Melissococcus plutonius is a Gram-positive bacterium and the causative agent of European foulbrood, a disease of honeybee brood. This bacterium was originally named Bacillus pluton by White (1912), later reclassified as Streptococcus pluton by Bailey in 1957, and recently, again by Bailey, as Melissococcus plutonius (1983).[1][2][3][4]
Several bacteria, along with Melissococcus plutonius, contribute to causing European foulbrood in bees: Paenibacillus alvei, Enterococcus faecalis, and Brevibacillus laterosporus.[5]
