Meraux is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 6,804 in 2020. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan statistical area.

History
In 2005, the town was devastated by storm surge and wind associated with Hurricane Katrina which destroyed the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal (MRGO) levee.
Geography
Meraux is located at 29°55′39″N 89°55′7″W (29.927561, -89.918508).[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12.4 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2) is land and 0.6 square mile (1.6 km2) (12.94%) is water.

2020 census
As of the 2020 census, Meraux had a population of 6,804. The median age was 35.2 years. 28.1% of residents were under the age of 18 and 12.1% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.9 males age 18 and over.[15][16]
97.9% of residents lived in urban areas, while 2.1% lived in rural areas.[17]
There were 2,427 households in Meraux, of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 48.8% were married-couple households, 14.9% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 26.4% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[15][16]
There were 2,554 housing units, of which 5.0% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.2% and the rental vacancy rate was 5.0%.[15][16]
2000 census
In 2000,[18] there were 10,192 people, 3,707 households, and 2,772 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,447.8 inhabitants per square mile (945.1/km2). There were 3,793 housing units at an average density of 911.0 units per square mile (351.7 units/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.71% White, 3.66% African American, 0.47% Native American, 1.63% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.07% of the population.
Education
Residents are zoned to schools in the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools.
As of 2007, Chalmette High School serves the population.
