Microsoft Copilot is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Microsoft AI, a division of Microsoft. The chatbot supersedes 2 previous products from Microsoft, a consumer chatbot under the same name and an enterprise, work and education chatbot and productivity suite app called Microsoft 365 Copilot, it will soon also integrate GitHub Copilot.

Background
In March 2026, Microsoft announced the creation of a Copilot division, the division would unify multiple apps under the Copilot name under a unified development team. Jacob Andreou would head the division and would report to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.[1][2][3]
In May 2026, it was announced that Microsoft had plans to merge the consumer Copilot, MS365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork and GitHub Copilot into one application bearing the Copilot name to simplify its product offering.[4][5]
History
On August 13, 2026, Microsoft announced that they would merge the consumer version of Copilot and MS365 Copilot into one application under the Copilot brand. The new app would be built and based on the foundation of the MS365 Copilot app and some consumer Copilot features would be carried over, except for the likes of Mico, group chats and Copilot Labs. Copilot Chat, a feature from MS365 Copilot, would be carried over and become free.[6][7]
