Background

In December 2013, Beyoncé released her self-titled fifth studio album, Beyoncé. Following the release of its expanded edition in 2014, media outlets reported on rumors that she would surprise-release another album sometime in November.[2] One of the alleged tracks was "Donk", which was assumed to feature rapper Nicki Minaj.[3] A song of the same title had been registered, under Beyoncé's name, to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers database.[4][5] In 2021, a snippet of the "Donk" demo was leaked online,[6] with the full version being leaked in September 2023.[7] The latter subsequently went viral on the video platform TikTok.[7]

Music and lyrics

"Donk", officially released as "Morning Dew (Donk)", was originally recorded in 2013.[8] The full version runs for about four minutes.[9] "Donk" is a R&B song,[10][11] retaining some elements of Beyoncé's musical style in 2013, built around a sultry sound and a bouncy, groovy rhythm.[12] It was written by Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, Darius Dixson, and Angela Woods, and produced by Beyoncé and Williams.[13]

In "Morning Dew (Donk)", Beyoncé sings about a romantic relationship that, despite having lasted for a while, still makes her feel young love. The lyrics revolve around her intense devotion to a long-time partner, reflecting on their time spent together on activities like watching the film Purple Rain. She sings in the first verse, "I think I wanna go back to school and have my locker full of pictures of you / So give me that 'A' in biology, I'm graduatin' soon".[13] The song contains several sexually charged lyrics, including some innuendos. Beyoncé sings about how much her partner is sexually attracted to her, telling him to give her his "morning dew".[13]

Release

"Morning Dew (Donk)" was surprise-released on July 4, 2026, by Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records.[1] This marked the start of a 60-day countdown leading up to the release of the 20th-anniversary edition of B'Day, Beyoncé's second studio album.[14] Accompanying the song's release was a black-and-white lyric video, which repurposes old footage from a 2007 Sports Illustrated swimsuit photoshoot, shot and directed by Cliff Watts.[9][15] It would become Beyoncé's first new music since the release of her Cowboy Carter in 2024.[16]
