Career
Tayfur was born in Erzurum in 1922.[1] He won the silver medal in the 79 kg class at the 1947 European Wrestling Championships.[1][3]
He reached the peak of his career at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. In the men's Greco-Roman middleweight event, he defeated the Netherlands' Groot on points in the opening round, pinned Argentina's Bolzi in 2:44 in the second round, and pinned Austria's Vogel in 0:52 in the third round. He then lost on points to Finland's Kinnunen and Sweden's Gösta Andersson Gröndahl, finishing the tournament with the silver medal.[4][5]
After retiring from active competition, Tayfur worked as a coach and contributed to the development of younger wrestlers in İzmir. Contemporary reporting on his funeral described him as one of the lasting names of Turkish wrestling and noted his later coaching work with İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyespor.[6][7]
