Mystras (Greek: Μυστράς, before: Άρμπορέσι, Arboresi or Άρμπορούσι, Arbourousi; Aromanian: Arburishu),[2] also Kipina (Greek: Κηπίνα)[3] is a settlement in Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. It is part of the community of Kalarrytes. The village is located on the right bank of the Kalaritikos river, a tributary of the Arachthos river and close to the monastery of Kipina.[2]

The toponym is derived from the earlier form Arboris(i), stemming from the Aromanian noun arbur and arbure meaning 'tree', from Latin arbor and the Aromanian suffix -.[4] The toponym later rendered as either Arboresi and Arborousi underwent a change of i into e and a due to the neighbouring liquid.[5]

The village was rendered in Ottoman Turkish cadastres and tax lists as Alboresi mizras in the late 19th century and early 20th century, where the term mizras referred to 'land for public use on the outskirts of a town'.[2] The form Alboresi stems from Arboresi with a change of r into l.[2] The village was renamed in the early interwar period as Mystras and is derived from a false etymology of the word mizras.[2] The term mystras is used within several Greek toponyms and derived from the noun mizithra, in reference to massive white rocks in modern Greek.[2]

Another name of the village is Kipina.[3] The toponym is also used for the nearby monastery and derived from the Slavic kipъ meaning 'image, painting' and the Slavic suffix -ina.[2]
