The National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eskom tasked with the transmission of electricity in South Africa. It was created with the unbundling of Eskom into 3 separate entities.
At the 2019 State of the Nation Address, President Ramaphosa announced that Eskom would be unbundled into three wholly owned entities; namely, Generation, Transmission and Distribution.[1] In 2020, Eskom began establishing independent boards and directors. On 17 December 2021, Eskom legally transferred its transmission division to the National Transmission Company of South Africa;[2] 374 transmission lines with a total length of 33 199 km, 500 three-phase transformers with a total capacity of 159 384 MVA located at 169 transmission substations were transferred to the NTCSA.[3]
On 13 January 2023, NTCSA applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa for transmission, import/export and trade licences.[3][4][5] In July 2023, the transmission licence was granted.[6] In September 2023, the trading and import/export licences were granted.[7]
On 1 July 2024, NTCSA began trading with Eskom and independent power producers.[8]
