He was a Member of Parliament, representing West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's Parliament, as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).[1] He runs an NGO called Grameen Sanchar Society (GRASSO) which started a Mobile PCO scheme in West Bengal with state and BSNL support.[2] Basu got into controversy after bank loans taken by the GRASSO were not repaid.[3][4][5][6]
