Occupy Dallas was a protest movement in Dallas, Texas that formed in 2011 as part of the broader Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in the United States. Participants criticized economic inequality and the influence of corporations and financial institutions in politics.

The first large Occupy Dallas protest took place on October 6, 2011, when demonstrators gathered in downtown Dallas and marched to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.[1] The protest was one of several demonstrations organized across Texas as the Occupy movement expanded beyond New York City.[2]

History

Early protests

Early demonstrations connected to Occupy Dallas took place in downtown Dallas. Protesters gathered at Pike Park before marching through downtown streets to the Federal Reserve building.[3]

Encampment at City Hall

Later in October 2011, Occupy Dallas protesters established a tent encampment behind Dallas City Hall after reaching an agreement with city officials allowing them to remain temporarily at the site.[4]

The encampment served as a gathering place where protesters held meetings and organized demonstrations.

Disputes with city officials

In early November 2011, Dallas officials warned that the encampment could be shut down if protesters failed to address violations of their agreement with the city, including sanitation concerns.[5]

Removal of the encampment

Later that month, Dallas police dismantled the Occupy Dallas encampment near City Hall after negotiations between city officials and protesters broke down.[6]

Although the encampment was removed, demonstrations and organizing activities associated with the Occupy movement continued in Dallas afterward.

Participants

Occupy Dallas included activists from a variety of political and community organizations.

According to Dallas Voice, writer and community activist Chaaz Quigley participated in the organizing stages of Occupy Dallas and led marches during early demonstrations.[7]
