Born in Troy, Missouri, Elzie later moved to Wentzville, Missouri with his family.[2] A 6'8 (203 cm) power forward, he appeared in a total of 109 games for the Holy Cross Crusaders between 1980 and 1984, averaging 7.6 points and 6.4 rebounds a contest.[3] He kicked off his professional career with MTV Gießen of the German Basketball Bundesliga in 1984 and stayed with the team until 1987.
