Peter Sunday David (born 1986) is a Nigerian-born jazz drummer, band leader and music director. He is widely known for his live performances across Nigeria and Europe, featuring alongside Waje, Tekno, Olamide, and Kent Edunjobi, Celestial Church of Christ Horeb Cathedral Choir, where he functioned as drummer, bandleader, and sound engineer on tours that spanned over 20 countries and major global stages. He is also known for his drumming on the popular track “Ebenizeri” track by the Apex Choir, which won best song of the year at the Celestial Music Awards.[1][2]

Background and education

Peter began his formal education at Ayanleye Memorial Primary School in Ifako-Ijaye, Lagos, where he completed his primary studies in 1998. He proceeded to Soncohs Comprehensive High School, where he earned his West African Senior School Certificate in 2003. David studied Banking and Finance at The Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, Nigeria, where he graduated with an ordinary national diploma (OND), in 2007.

He later gained admission into Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) Diploma School of Music, Onikan, Lagos, in 2010 on a full scholarship from MTN Communications. There, he studied music, jazz drums and percussion and graduated in 2012 as the best jazz drummer with an award.

In 2016, he gained admission into the University of Lagos, Faculty of Arts, where he studied music and drums, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music, and won an award as the best instrumentalist of the year in 2019. [3]

Career

David started off working at Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria, where he worked as a cashier from 2007 to 2010. He started his music professionally in 2010, when he gained admission into the MUSON Diploma School of Music.

He started working with the MUSON Symphony Orchestra, directed by a German maestro, Thomas Kanitz. This marked the beginning of his classical music journey. He was selected and started working with the MUSON Symphony Orchestra, performing all over Nigeria and working with other artists and musicians.

In 2012, he started working in a musical studio, Alexandra Communication, Ikeja, Lagos, as a sound engineer. He managed the studio environment and dived into live sounds and theatre productions.[4]

Peter David has so far featured on different orchestra performances with Dr. Kunle Pinmiloye (Kay’s sticks) and the Daystar Christian Centre, Lagos, Nigeria during their yearly Christmas carol service and concerts he introduced the electronic sample drum machine into the live band music through his innovations and technical understanding, he started it with the Awesome tones band where he served as the drummer, he recorded the first and second albums.[5]

Over the years, Peter Sunday David has worked with some of the big names in Nigerian music. He served as bandleader and drummer for singer Waje for over five years, performing extensively within and outside Nigeria, including a notable African Day performance in South Africa in May, 2016.

His collaboration with Afrobeat artiste Tekno further elevated his international profile, as he functioned as drummer, bandleader, and sound engineer on tours that spanned over 20 countries and some major global stages.[6]

He worked with gospel artist Kent Edunjobi which their most notable work together is “Ebenizeri, Hymns we love to sing Vol 1, Ore Ope, Yan Fanda, Ogo, Praise in Zion 1.0, Cornerstone and other studio recorded songs and videos, they feature on different stages, events and concerts together with the crew.[7]

Peter David have recorded drum tracks on different albums and sound tracks. He recorded the live drums on “IRETI” a sound track that was produced by Kent Edunjobi, from the movie “SWALLOW” that was produced by Kunle Afolayan for KAP TV.

In November 2025, he was featured at Olamide live in OVO Arena in London as the Jazz drummer. He currently has about 2000 live performances to his credit.[8]

Peter is passionate about knowledge transfer. He has facilitated masterclasses in music and sound engineering, mentoring young talents and advocating for professionalism and technical excellence in live sound production. He has so far trained over 50 young engineers.[9]

Personal life

Peter is married to Hannah Oluwaseun David and they have two daughters together
