The town was named Pinggu (Chinese: 平谷; lit. 'Flat Valley') because of its location in a plain surrounded by mountains on the north, east and south. When it became an area in 2002, the name Yuyang (Chinese: 渔阳; lit. 'Fishing Sun') was given in order to distinguish it from the larger district.[2] However, as of 2025, official sources now solely use the term Pinggu Town once more, as they have begun to move away from the "area" classification.[3][4]
