Portugal has contested every edition of World Athletics Championships, having won medals in nearly every edition.[1] Its first world champion was Rosa Mota, when she won the women's marathon at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics. In the men's side, Nelson Évora became the first world champion, when he won the triple jump event in 2007.
