Background and release
Sombr released his debut studio album, I Barely Know Her on August 22, 2025 to positive critical reception.[3] After releasing four singles from the project, he released "Homewrecker", his first new single, on February 5, 2026.[4]
On September 15, 2025, Sombr was announced as part of the line-up for the 2026 Coachella Festival, performing on the Outdoor Theatre stage.[5] His set during weekend one took place on April 11, 2026, where he performed "Potential" for the first time.[6][7] The song was officially released a few days later on April 17, 2026.[8]
Composition
"Potential" is a synth-pop and alternative pop song where Sombr reflects on a lost relationship and the impact that no longer being in the relationship has on him.
Critical reception
Andrew Unterberger of Billboard wrote that the song sound reprised the artist song "12 to 12", with "some Random Access Memories by Daft Punk-style vocoder warbling" and with "more heartbroken lyrics".[1]
Music video
The music video for the song was released simultaneously with the release of the song on Sombr's YouTube channel.[9] It was directed by Gus Black and stars Sombr alongside actors Madeline Argy and Gavin Casalegno in a Bonnie and Clyde inspired story. In a statement celebrating the song's release, Sombr expressed, “my new single ‘Potential’ is out now with a music video that could potentially be my best one yet. Love you so very much. I’m so proud of this.”[10]
