Powhatan Nation of American Indians
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Powhatan Nation of American Indians is a legally registered tribal entity in Madison County, Alabama.
The tribe is a direct descendant of the core tribe of the Powhatan Confederacy, the Powhatan (proper). The tribe is documented fleeing Virginia in the early 1800's, first migrating into North Carolina, the Tennessee Valley and finally to what would become Madison County Alabama, the location the tribe chose as their reanchoring for ancestral homelands.
Madison County Court documents from the 1800's mention the tribe by name and that they had immigrated to the region from Virginia many years prior. Today the tribe is in the process of obtaining federal recognition, while staying dedicated to their mission of cultural preservation. [1]
