Punderdome (formerly known as Punderdome 3000[2][3]) is a pun-based comedy event hosted at Littlefield, a performance space and bar, based in Brooklyn, NY. After Jo Firestone and her father Fred Firestone started hosting the event in May 2011,[3][1] the event runs approximately every six weeks.[4]
A typical round includes revealing a category (for example, "kitchen utensils") to the contestants and they are given 90 seconds to generate as many puns as possible.[1]
Some contestants have puns as names, such as: "Do Pun to Others", "Punky Brewster", "Punter S Thompson", "Forest Wittyker", "Glutton for Punishment", "Puntouchable", "Noah Constrictor", "When Wit Hits the Fan" "Punamerican Activities", and "Hot Cross Puns".[2][1][4]
Punderdone was founded in Spring 2011 by Jo Firestone after they heard of the O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships based in Austin, Texas.[1] Firestone originally hosted the event with her father, Fred Firestone, who is also a Rodney Dangerfield impersonator.[2]
Event
The Punderdome is a multi-staged event:[4]
- Pun Battle Royale: rapid-fire jokes on a given topic
- Tournament of Champions: contestants are given two minutes to brainstorm puns on a category and write a two-minute standup set with as many puns as possible
Contentant's jokes are judged by a "human clap-o-meter", who is an audience member blindfolded in a chair onstage. For each contestant's performance, the judge assigns a number, from one to ten, based on the volume and enthusiasm of audience applause.[4]
