Recep İvedik 7 is a 2022 Turkish comedy film directed by Togan Gökbakar and co-written with Şahan Gökbakar. It is the seventh installment in the Recep İvedik film series and stars Şahan Gökbakar reprising his role as the titular character, alongside Öznur Serçeler and Nurullah Çelebi.[1][2][3]
The film follows Recep and his friend Nurullah as they retreat from economic hardship in Istanbul to a village house inherited from Recep's grandmother. Upon arrival, they discover a large-scale development project that threatens the local environment and community, prompting Recep to lead an improbable resistance effort.[4][5]
Recep İvedik 7 was released exclusively on Disney+ on December 9, 2022, becoming the first film in the series to bypass a theatrical release.[1][6] It was the most-watched film on Disney+ Turkey during the platform's first year and was credited with attracting over 1 million new subscribers to the service.[7][8]
Recep İvedik, struggling with rising living costs in Istanbul, decides to leave the city and move into a house inherited from his grandmother in a rural village. Accompanied by his loyal friend Nurullah, Recep arrives in the village and soon learns that a large-scale development project is planned for the area, which would destroy much of the surrounding forest and harm the local community. Outraged, Recep takes it upon himself to oppose the project. With the help of Nurullah and his new neighbor, lawyer Büşra Altın, Recep rallies the villagers to resist the development plans. Through a series of comedic mishaps and improvised confrontations, Recep inadvertently becomes the leader of the resistance, ultimately finding a way to thwart the project and protect the village's way of life.[4][5][9]

Production
Development
The film was announced in 2022 by Şahan Gökbakar via a video update, revealing that Recep İvedik 7 would be a Disney+ original production, marking the first entry in the franchise to forgo a theatrical release in favor of a streaming debut.[1] The screenplay was co-written by Şahan Gökbakar and his brother Togan Gökbakar, who also served as director and producer, continuing the family-led creative control that has defined the series since its inception.[9]
Filming
Principal photography took place in the Kozak Plateau (Kozak Yaylası) in the Bergama district of İzmir Province, Turkey. Specific scenes were filmed in the rural village of Yuntan Köyü, chosen for its authentic pastoral landscapes that contrast with the urban setting of Istanbul depicted at the film's opening.[10][11] Additional forest scenes were reportedly shot in the Longoz forest in Karacabey, Bursa.[9] The film was shot with a runtime of 133 minutes and utilizes a straightforward visual style emphasizing on-location authenticity and practical comedy gags.[12]
Release
Recep İvedik 7 was released exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform in Turkey on December 9, 2022.[1][13] This direct-to-streaming strategy marked a significant departure from the series' historically theatrical distribution model, a decision influenced by the post-pandemic shifts in audience viewing habits and the economic challenges facing Turkish cinema at the time.[6]
